Organised as a collaboration between METU and MNB Arts and Culture, the exhibition was first displayed in the spring of 2024 at the METU Gallery in Budapest. Reopened in Austria on the 28th of November with an updated selection of artworks, the exhibition not only celebrates the intersection of design and art but also commemorates the centenary of the Central Bank of Hungary and the Collegium Hungaricum in Vienna.
Playfulness, experimentation, and innovation. These are the leading themes of the exhibition, which includes works created by METU students specialising in graphic design, fashion, textile, and jewellery accessory design during the autumn semester of 2023/2024. The collection features board games, embroidery, costumes, publications and fine art works, all of which directly reflect the pieces in the MNB collection. The original works are in dialogue with the students’ reinterpretations, offering new perspectives and meanings.
At the opening ceremony, welcome speeches were given by Dr Márton Méhes, director of the Collegium Hungaricum in Vienna, and BM a.D. Maria Rauch-Kallat MBA, president of the Austrian-Hungarian Society. The exhibition was formally opened by Chiara Galbusera, curator of the Austrian National Bank’s art collection, and Dr Kinga Hamvai, the exhibition’s curator and head of MNB Arts and Culture.
Many METU students attended the opening, adding to the atmosphere and enhancing the curatorial tour that followed.
The Immersion exhibition is open to visitors until 28 February 2025 at the Collegium Hungaricum Vienna (Hollandstraße 4, 1020 Vienna, Austria).
