The MNB Contemporary Art Collection’s debut in Miskolc

The Miskolc Gallery, as part of the Herman Ottó Museum, is hosting the exhibition featuring a selection from the contemporary art collection managed by the Central Bank of Hungary. The curator of the exhibition is Tímea Fülöp.

Titled New Function. Artists, Engineers, Contractors, the exhibition was preceded by a press conference, during which curator Tímea Fülöp elaborated on the concept behind the exhibition and the relationship of the 15 exhibiting artists with technology and industry. Kinga Hamvai, Head of MNB Arts and Culture, also spoke about the collection’s role in social responsibility and the division’s aim to showcase these works in as many locations across Hungary as possible.

The evening was hosted by András Kákóczki, Director of the Miskolc Gallery. Welcome speeches were delivered by Máté Vincze, Deputy State Secretary for Public Collections and Cultural Development at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation; József Tóth-Szántai, Mayor of Miskolc; and Kinga Hamvai, Head of MNB Arts and Culture. The exhibition was officially opened by Tímea Fülöp, who also gave a guided tour for the guests. Musical contributions were provided by the Palace Trombone Quartet.

The exhibition highlights the significance of the wood and metal industries, mining, glassmaking, the machinery industry serving these fields, as well as the construction sector. The selected works nuance the perceived sterility associated with production, ranging from the uniformity of laser-cut elements to the precision of car-painting spray guns. The emphasis, however, is on their unrestricted use, as the works also reflect on artistic production and creation as a form of labour.
