Since 2022, the MNB Arts and Culture division has been organizing exhibitions both in Hungary and internationally, from Veszprém to Miskolc, and from Seoul to New York. The latest addition to this series is Y-Profile curated by Gábor Rieder, an exhibition showcasing the Millennial generation of artists from the Central Bank of Hungary’s contemporary art collection, now on view at the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art.
The artists of Generation Y grew up as digital natives in the world of consumer capitalism. The flood of advertisements and products following the political transition, as well as the 2008 global financial crisis, exposed them early to the less favorable aspects of socioeconomic realities.
The selected artists explore the possibilities of digital image-editing programs and industrial production logic, pushing the boundaries of geometry and pop art. Thanks to international residency programs, their perspectives are shaped not only by local but also global artistic trends. Since the 2010s, they have gained increasing international recognition, particularly through the online sphere and gallery representation. Their works have grown in popularity not only abroad but also among Hungarian collectors and institutions.
On the eve of the pre-opening, Gábor Rieder held a guided tour for the participating artists.
At the public opening on March 13, Julia Fabényi, director of the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art, welcomed the visitors. Opening speeches were delivered by Kinga Hamvai, art historian and Head of MNB Arts and Culture, and Gábor Rieder, curator of the exhibition.
